As European demand for curcumin-rich Indian turmeric surges, importers are facing a tightening supply chain. Here is our 2026 outlook for Turmeric Finger and Powder exports.
Current Market Dynamics
The Nizamabad and Erode mandis have seen a 15% reduction in early arrivals this season. This supply crunch, coupled with rising pharmaceutical demand in the EU for high-curcumin (3-5%) turmeric, has pushed FOB prices up.
Price Projections
We anticipate prices to remain firm through Q3. Buyers are advised to lock in annual contracts now rather than purchasing on spot basis.

India's Production Dominance & 2026 Crop Outlook
India produces approximately 78% of the world's turmeric — around 1.1 million MT annually. Key producing states:
| State | Main Districts | Share | Grade |
| Telangana | Nizamabad, Karimnagar | 35% | Nizamabad Bulb — high curcumin |
| Andhra Pradesh | Erode region extended | 15% | Mixed grades |
| Tamil Nadu | Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri | 30% | Salem/Erode Finger — premium |
| Maharashtra | Sangli, Kolhapur | 12% | Rajapuri — medium curcumin |
| Others | Odisha, Karnataka | 8% | Various |
The 2025–26 turmeric crop (harvested January–March 2026) benefited from good northeast monsoon rainfall in Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Production is estimated at 1.15 million MT — slightly above average. Prices have eased from the 2024 peak (₹22,000/quintal) to ₹14,000–₹16,000/quintal in 2026, translating to FOB of $1,400–$1,650/MT for Salem Finger grade.
Curcumin Content Standards by Market
Curcumin content (the active yellow pigment) is the primary quality determinant. Specifications vary by market:
- Pharmaceutical/nutraceutical: Min 3.0–5.0% curcuminoids by HPLC
- Food coloring industry: Min 2.5–3.0% curcuminoids
- Culinary/retail: Min 2.0% acceptable; premium markets prefer 3.0%+
- FSSAI standard (India): Min 2.0% volatile oil
Adulteration Alert: Turmeric adulteration with Lead Chromate (Metanil Yellow or lead paint) to boost colour is a documented food safety issue. Always request a specific test for lead (Pb <2.5 ppm, EU limit <0.5 ppm) and Sudan dyes. Both are tested by NABL labs as part of the standard spice export test panel.
